  1. Word Primary Stress: Word में मुख्य जोर कहाँ देना है।
  2. Phonemes: अलग-अलग vowel और consonant sounds कैसे बनते हैं।
  3. Contractions and Reduced Forms: बातचीत में words natural तरीके से छोटे कैसे होते हैं।

नीचे दिए गए rules useful patterns हैं, लेकिन English में exceptions भी होते हैं। इसलिए rules को starting guide समझिए, final law नहीं। नई vocabulary सीखते समय dictionary में pronunciation और stress mark अवश्य check करें।

A) Word Primary Stress क्या होता है?

किसी word को छोटे बोलने वाले हिस्सों में बाँटा जा सकता है। इन हिस्सों को syllables कहते हैं। प्रत्येक syllable में सामान्यतः एक vowel sound होता है।

One Syllable

book, pen, car, school, work

Two Syllables

TA-ble, DOC-tor, re-LAX, be-GIN

Three Syllables

BEAU-ti-ful, COM-pa-ny, im-POR-tant

Four Syllables

e-DU-ca-tion, in-for-MA-tion

किसी word में जिस syllable को बाकी syllables की तुलना में अधिक clear, strong, slightly longer या higher pitch पर बोला जाता है, उसे primary stressed syllable कहते हैं।

उदाहरण के लिए TA-ble में पहला syllable strong है। हम इसे “टे-बुल” बोलते समय “टे” पर अधिक जोर देकर बोलते हैं। इसी प्रकार re-LAX में दूसरा syllable strong है।

Strong syllable = Clearer + Louder + Slightly Longer + Pitch Change
Common mistake: Stress देने का अर्थ चिल्लाना नहीं है। केवल stressed syllable को बाकी syllables से थोड़ा अधिक prominent बनाना है।

Rule 1: बहुत से Two-Syllable Nouns और Adjectives

बहुत से two-syllable nouns और adjectives में stress पहले syllable पर आता है। आवाज पहले strong होती है और फिर दूसरे syllable पर हल्की हो जाती है।

Noun/Adjective Pattern: STRONG → weak
Word Stress Easy Sound Example
table TA-ble टे-बुल The table is clean.
doctor DOC-tor डॉक-टर The doctor is here.
happy HAP-py है-पि I am happy today.
clever CLEV-er क्ले-वə She is a clever student.
window WIN-dow विन-डो Please open the window.
teacher TEA-cher टी-चə My teacher is helpful.

इन्हें बोलते समय दोनों syllables को बराबर जोर से मत बोलिए। “TA-BLE” की जगह “TA-ble” बोलिए। “DOC-TOR” की जगह “DOC-tor” बोलिए। दूसरा syllable पूरी तरह गायब नहीं होगा, लेकिन हल्का रहेगा।

Two-Syllable Verbs का सामान्य Pattern

बहुत से two-syllable verbs में stress दूसरे syllable पर आता है। खासकर जब word की शुरुआत किसी weak prefix जैसे re-, be-, de-, a- आदि से होती है।

Common Verb Pattern: weak → STRONG
Verb Stress Easy Sound Example
begin be-GIN बि-गिन Let us begin the class.
relax re-LAX रि-लैक्स Please relax.
decide de-CIDE डि-साइड You must decide today.
arrive a-RRIVE अ-राइव They will arrive soon.
return re-TURN रि-टर्न I will return tomorrow.
explain ex-PLAIN इक्स-प्लेन Please explain this rule.
Easy hand trick: जिस syllable पर stress देना है, उस syllable को बोलते समय एक बार हाथ से table पर tap कीजिए। जैसे: re–LAX, de–CIDE, be–GIN।

ध्यान रखिए कि noun और verb वाला pattern बहुत उपयोगी है, पर हर word पर लागू नहीं होता। उदाहरण के लिए “answer” एक verb हो सकता है, फिर भी इसका stress पहले syllable पर रहता है: AN-swer।

Noun और Verb में Stress बदलने वाले Words

कुछ words की spelling एक जैसी होती है, लेकिन noun और verb के रूप में उनका stress बदल जाता है। यह pattern समझना बहुत useful है।

Noun/Adjective Verb Meaning Example
RE-cord re-CORD This is a record. / Please record this video.
PRE-sent pre-SENT I received a present. / I will present the plan.
PRO-duce pro-DUCE Fresh produce / We produce useful content.
CON-tract con-TRACT Sign the contract. / Metals contract in cold weather.
IN-crease in-CREASE There is an increase. / We need to increase sales.

हिंदी में समझें तो noun वाला word किसी व्यक्ति, वस्तु या concept का नाम बताता है। Verb action बताता है। पहले रूप में stress अक्सर आगे आता है; action वाले रूप में stress आगे से पीछे चला जाता है।

Rule 2: Compound Words का Stress

जब दो अलग words मिलकर एक नया word या एक specific idea बनाते हैं, तो उसे compound word कहा जाता है। बहुत से compound nouns में stress पहले part पर आता है।

Compound Noun: FIRST word strong → second word weak
Compound Word Stress Pattern Hindi Meaning

Phrasal Combinations

Original rule में prepositional compound words के exceptions की बात कही गई है। सरल रूप में समझें तो हर दो-word expression को compound noun की तरह नहीं बोला जाता।

Phrasal verbs में particle या preposition जैसे up, out, off, in भी strong हो सकते हैं:

बोलकर देखिए

Please sit DOWN. Turn it OFF. Find OUT the truth. Wake UP early. Come IN, please.

Fixed expressions में stress dictionary और actual listening के माध्यम से सीखना सबसे अच्छा रहता है। हर phrase पर एक ही rule लगाने का प्रयास confusion पैदा कर सकता है।

Rule 3: Prefix और Suffix वाले Words

Prefix वह छोटा हिस्सा है जो किसी word की शुरुआत में जुड़ता है। जैसे re-, un-, dis-, im-, pre-।

Suffix वह हिस्सा है जो word के अंत में जुड़ता है। जैसे -ful, -ness, -tion, -ic, -ity।

कई two-syllable verbs में prefix हल्का रहता है और root syllable पर मुख्य stress आता है:

Word Parts Stress Example
rewrite re + write re-WRITE Please rewrite this sentence.
unknown un + known un-KNOWN The reason is unknown.
dislike dis + like dis-LIKE I dislike dishonesty.
prepare pre + pare pre-PARE Prepare for the meeting.
improve im + prove im-PROVE Practice will improve your English.

इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि हर prefix हमेशा unstressed होगा। English pronunciation में word history, word family और suffix का प्रकार भी stress को प्रभावित करता है।

कुछ Suffix Stress को बदलते हैं

कुछ suffix स्वयं stress लेते हैं। कुछ suffix अपने ठीक पहले वाले syllable पर stress लाते हैं। कुछ suffix stress को लगभग नहीं बदलते।

1. Stress लेने वाले Common Suffixes

-ee, -eer, -ese, -ique जैसे endings पर अक्सर stress आता है।

  • employ-EE
  • engin-EER
  • Japan-ESE
  • un-IQUE

2. Stress को अपने पहले लाने वाले Suffixes

-tion, -sion, -ic, -ity जैसे suffixes के पहले वाले syllable पर stress आने की tendency होती है।

  • edu-CA-tion
  • infor-MA-tion
  • eco-NO-mic
  • possi-BI-li-ty
  • elec-TRI-ci-ty

3. Stress को सामान्यतः न बदलने वाले Suffixes

-ness, -less, -ful, -ly, -ment जैसे suffixes अक्सर original root का stress बनाए रखते हैं।

  • HAP-py → HAP-pi-ness
  • CARE → CARE-ful
  • HELP → HELP-less
  • QUI-et → QUI-et-ly
  • de-VE-lop → de-VE-lop-ment
किसी word को केवल spelling देखकर mechanically pronounce मत कीजिए। Word family देखिए, syllables तोड़िए, stress पहचानिए और फिर पूरा word बोलिए।

Rule 4 और 5: Multi-Syllable Words

Word Syllable Division Stress Pattern Easy Guide
beautiful beau-ti-ful BEAU-ti-ful ब्यू-टि-फुल
important im-por-tant im-POR-tant इम-पॉर-टंट
computer com-pu-ter com-PU-ter कम-प्यू-टə
company com-pa-ny COM-pa-ny कम-प-नी
education ed-u-ca-tion ed-u-CA-tion एजु-के-शन
opportunity op-por-tu-ni-ty op-por-TU-ni-ty ऑपर-ट्यू-निटी

Weak Syllables

Clap Practice

नीचे words बोलिए। केवल capital part पर clap कीजिए:

BEAU-ti-ful im-POR-tant com-PU-ter ed-u-CA-tion in-for-MA-tion op-por-TU-ni-ty

One-Syllable Words में Falling Glide

One-syllable words में internal word stress नहीं होता, क्योंकि उनमें केवल एक syllable है। लेकिन अकेले बोलते समय या statement के अंत में उनकी pitch नीचे glide कर सकती है।

उदाहरण:

  • Yes. ↘ — हाँ, निश्चित रूप से।
  • No. ↘ — नहीं।
  • Fine. ↘ — ठीक है।
  • Good. ↘ — अच्छा है।
  • Right. ↘ — सही है।

Downward arrow का अर्थ है कि word की pitch थोड़ी ऊँची शुरू होकर नीचे आए। लेकिन question या surprise में वही one-syllable word ऊपर भी जा सकता है:

  • Really? ↗ — सच में?
  • Me? ↗ — मैं?
  • Now? ↗ — अभी?
Intonation meaning और attitude से जुड़ी होती है। इसलिए “one syllable हमेशा नीचे जाएगा” को absolute rule न मानें। Statements में falling tone common है; questions और surprise में rising tone हो सकती है।

B) Phonemes: Individual Sounds

Vowels: Clear Vowel Sounds क्यों जरूरी हैं?

Vowel sound बनाते समय हवा mouth से बिना किसी complete blockage के बाहर आती है। English vowel sounds केवल A, E, I, O, U letters तक सीमित नहीं हैं। एक ही vowel letter अलग-अलग words में अलग sounds दे सकता है।

Compare कीजिए:

  • cat, car, call — तीनों में letter “a” है, लेकिन sound अलग है।
  • sit और seat — spelling और vowel length बदलने से meaning बदलता है।
  • full और fool — vowel की quality बदलने से word बदल जाता है।
Word Pair Difference Practice Sentence
ship / sheep छोटी “इ” / लंबी “ई” I saw a ship carrying sheep.
sit / seat सिट / सीट Please sit on this seat.
full / fool फुल / फूल The glass is full. Do not act like a fool.
bed / bad बेड / बैड This is a bad bed.
cup / cap कप / कैप Put the cap near the cup.

इन्हें minimal pairs कहा जाता है—ऐसे दो words जिनमें केवल एक sound का अंतर होता है। Minimal-pair practice से ears और mouth दोनों train होते हैं।

Schwa: English का सबसे Common Weak Vowel

Schwa का symbol /ə/ है। इसकी sound बहुत हल्की “अ” जैसी होती है। यह सामान्यतः unstressed syllables में आती है।

  • about — ə-BOUT
  • ago — ə-GO
  • teacher — TEACH-ə
  • support — sə-PORT
  • banana — bə-NA-nə

Schwa natural English rhythm का secret है। यदि आप हर unstressed vowel को पूरा और भारी बोलेंगे, तो speech stiff लग सकती है। Schwa weak syllable को छोटा, relaxed और natural बनाता है।

Consonants: Mouth Position

  • W: lips को गोल कीजिए; teeth lip को touch नहीं करते—water, work, window।

Practice: very well, west village, warm voice, white van।

TH Sound

“Think” को “सिंक” और “this” को “दिस” बोल देना common है। Clear English के लिए tongue की tip को upper और lower teeth के बीच हल्का रखिए और हवा बाहर निकालिए।

  • think, thank, three, healthy
  • this, that, those, mother

S और SH में अंतर

  • sip / ship
  • see / she
  • so / show
  • sell / shell

यदि “sip” को “ship” बोल दिया जाए, तो meaning बदल जाएगा। इसलिए consonant accuracy केवल stylish accent के लिए नहीं, clear meaning के लिए भी जरूरी है।

Word के अंतिम Consonant को मत खाइए

कई learners word के last sound को छोड़ देते हैं। इससे singular, plural, present और past forms confusing हो सकते हैं।

  • cap और cab
  • rice और rise
  • back और bag
  • walk और walked
  • book और books
हर consonant को extra force से explode भी मत कीजिए। लक्ष्य final sound को audible बनाना है, unnatural बनाना नहीं।

Sound Practice Drill

The very wise woman wore a white dress. I think this is the right path. She sells fresh fish near the shop. Please sit on this seat. He packed the black bag.

C) Conversational Contractions और Reduced Forms

Book English और natural conversational English में सबसे बड़ा अंतर केवल vocabulary का नहीं होता। असली अंतर होता है connected speech का।

Native और fluent speakers हर word को अलग-अलग dictionary form में नहीं बोलते। वे words को जोड़ते हैं, कुछ sounds हल्के करते हैं और grammar words को reduce करते हैं। इससे speech faster, smoother और natural सुनाई देती है।

Content Words और Function Words

Sentence में दो प्रकार के words समझना useful है:

Content Words

ये sentence का मुख्य meaning देते हैं—nouns, main verbs, adjectives और adverbs।

Example: Sunil teaches English clearly.

Sunil, teaches, English और clearly important content words हैं।

Function Words

ये grammar structure बनाते हैं—articles, pronouns, helping verbs, prepositions और conjunctions।

Examples: a, an, the, to, for, of, can, have, and.

Normal conversation में content words अधिक stressed होते हैं। Function words अक्सर weak और short हो जाते हैं।

Sentence को train समझिए। Content words बड़े stations हैं और function words उनके बीच के छोटे रास्ते। हर छोटे word पर train रोकेंगे तो conversation natural flow में नहीं चलेगी।

Weak Forms में Schwa का प्रयोग

कई function words अपनी strong dictionary pronunciation छोड़कर weak form में schwa /ə/ लेने लगते हैं।

Word Strong Form Weak Conversational Form Example
to टू टə I want tə learn.
for फॉर फə This is fə you.
and ऐन्ड ən / n Tea ən coffee.
of अव əv A cup əv tea.
can कैन कən I kən do it.
the दी / द दə Open thə door.

इसका अर्थ यह नहीं कि function word कभी strong नहीं होता। Contrast, correction या emphasis में strong form लौट आता है।

Compare:

  • Normal: “I can do it.” यहाँ can weak हो सकता है।
  • Emphasis: “Yes, I CAN do it!” यहाँ can strong है।
  • Normal: “This is for you.” यहाँ for weak हो सकता है।
  • Contrast: “It is FOR you, not from you.” यहाँ for strong है।

Standard Contractions: Writing और Speaking दोनों में

Standard contractions formal और informal context के अनुसार writing और speaking दोनों में इस्तेमाल होती हैं।

Full Form Contraction Example
I am I'm I'm ready.
You are You're You're doing well.
He is He's He's my friend.
We are We're We're learning English.
Do not Don't Don't worry.
Cannot Can't I can't attend today.
Will not Won't She won't be late.
I have I've I've completed the work.
We would We'd We'd like some tea.
They will They'll They'll call tomorrow.

Slow speech या special emphasis में speaker full form बोल सकता है:

  • “I’m ready.” — normal conversation
  • “I AM ready.” — जोर देकर correction
  • “He isn’t coming.” — normal
  • “He IS NOT coming.” — strong emphasis

Conversational Contractions: Wanna, Gonna और अन्य Forms

Natural fast conversation में कुछ word groups और छोटे हो जाते हैं। इन्हें reduced forms या conversational contractions कहा जाता है।

Full Expression Conversational Sound Example
want to wanna / वॉनə I wanna learn English.
going to gonna / गनə I'm gonna call him.
got to gotta / गॉटə I've gotta go.
have to hafta / हैफ्टə I hafta finish this.
has to hasta / हैस्टə She hasta leave early.
kind of kinda / काइन्डə It's kinda difficult.
give me gimme / गिमि Gimme a minute.
let me lemme / लेमि Lemme explain.
did you didja / डिड्जə Didja call him?
could you couldja / कुड्जə Couldja help me?
Important: “Wanna”, “gonna”, “gotta” जैसी forms सामान्यतः informal speech को दिखाती हैं। इन्हें formal emails, job applications, official reports और academic writing में standard full forms की जगह न लिखें।

“Wanna” का सही Grammar Use

“Wanna” का अर्थ want to होता है। यह हर जगह “want” को replace नहीं कर सकता।

  • Correct informal speech: I wanna learn. = I want to learn.
  • Correct informal speech: Do you wanna come? = Do you want to come?
  • Wrong: I wanna a car.
  • Correct: I want a car.

“I want a car” में want के बाद noun है, “to + verb” नहीं। इसलिए यहाँ wanna नहीं आएगा।

“Gonna” का सही Use

“Gonna” केवल उस स्थिति में “going to” का conversational reduction है जब future plan या prediction व्यक्त की जा रही हो।

  • I'm gonna study tonight. = I am going to study tonight.
  • It's gonna rain. = It is going to rain.
  • We're gonna launch a course. = We are going to launch a course.

लेकिन physical movement में सावधानी रखिए:

  • I'm going to Delhi. — यहाँ Delhi destination है।
  • “I'm gonna Delhi” standard form नहीं है।

Reduced Forms Natural Speech को कैसे सुधारती हैं?

Reduced forms केवल speed बढ़ाने के लिए नहीं होतीं। इनके तीन बड़े फायदे हैं:

  1. Time Stress: Important words के बीच timing अधिक natural हो जाती है।
  2. Intonation: Sentence का rise और fall smooth हो जाता है।
  3. NSQ: Natural Speech Quality विकसित होती है।

उदाहरण:

Slow से Natural Speech तक

Full: I WANT TO GO TO THE MARKET. Better rhythm: I WANT to GO to the MARKET. Natural informal speech: I wanna GO to the MARKET.

पहली line में हर word बराबर strong है, इसलिए robotic लग सकती है। दूसरी और तीसरी lines में meaning वाले words prominent हैं और grammar words हल्के हैं।

Connected Speech का आसान अभ्यास

Words को पहले अलग बोलिए, फिर धीरे-धीरे जोड़िए:

  • want + to → want to → wanna
  • going + to → going to → gonna
  • give + me → give me → gimme
  • let + me → let me → lemme
  • could + you → could you → couldja

Reduction को force मत कीजिए। पहले full form को सही बोलना सीखिए। फिर listening और repetition के माध्यम से natural reduction विकसित कीजिए। बहुत जल्दी बोलने की कोशिश में sounds निगलना clear pronunciation नहीं है।

Hindi Speakers की Common Pronunciation Mistakes

1. हर Syllable पर बराबर जोर

Wrong tendency: IN-FOR-MA-TION

Better: in-for-MA-tion

2. Word के बाद Extra Vowel

“school” को “इस्कूल” और “film” को “फिलम” बोलना। आवश्यकता न हो तो extra vowel न जोड़ें। Regional influence स्वाभाविक है; awareness के साथ practice करें।

3. V और W को मिलाना

very और wary, vine और wine का mouth position अलग रखिए।

4. Final Sound छोड़ना

“worked” को केवल “work” और “books” को केवल “book” न बोलें।

5. Spelling

15-Minute Daily Pronunciation Practice Plan

Pronunciation केवल पढ़ने से improve नहीं होती। Mouth muscles, listening ability और speech memory को daily training चाहिए। नीचे दिया गया simple routine अपनाइए।

Minute 1–3: Warm-Up

  • Lips को round और spread कीजिए।
  • धीरे-धीरे ee–oo, ee–oo बोलिए।
  • V और W: very–well, vine–wine बोलिए।
  • TH: think–this–three–those बोलिए।

Minute 4–6: Word Stress

प्रतिदिन पाँच words चुनिए। Syllables अलग कीजिए और stressed syllable पर clap कीजिए।

TA-ble re-LAX im-POR-tant in-for-MA-tion op-por-TU-ni-ty

Minute 7–9: Minimal Pairs

प्रत्येक pair को पाँच बार बोलिए:

  • ship–sheep
  • sit–seat
  • full–fool
  • vest–west
  • sip–ship

Minute 10–12: Weak Forms

पहले full sentence बोलिए। फिर content words को strong और function words को weak कीजिए।

  • I want to learn English.
  • She can do it.
  • This gift is for you.
  • Give me a cup of tea.
  • We are going to start today.

Minute 13–15: Record and Review

  1. Phone recorder खोलिए।
  2. एक short paragraph पढ़िए।
  3. अपनी recording सुनिए।
  4. एक ही mistake identify कीजिए।
  5. Paragraph दोबारा record कीजिए।
हर दिन दस mistakes सुधारने की कोशिश मत कीजिए। प्रतिदिन केवल एक pattern पर काम करेंगे तो improvement measurable और sustainable रहेगा।

Complete Reading Practice

नीचे paragraph को पहले slowly पढ़िए। दूसरी बार stressed words पर अधिक focus कीजिए। तीसरी बार contractions और weak forms का उपयोग करते हुए natural conversation की तरह बोलिए।

I'm learning English because I want to communicate confidently. I don't need to copy anyone's accent. I only need clear sounds, correct word stress and regular practice. I'm going to practice for fifteen minutes every day. I know that small, consistent improvements can produce excellent results.

Easy Hindi Meaning

मैं English सीख रहा हूँ क्योंकि मैं confidence के साथ communicate करना चाहता हूँ। मुझे किसी का accent copy करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। मुझे केवल clear sounds, सही word stress और regular practice चाहिए। मैं हर दिन पंद्रह मिनट practice करने वाला हूँ। मैं जानता हूँ कि छोटे लेकिन लगातार improvements शानदार results दे सकते हैं।

Natural Speech Version

“I am” को I'm, “do not” को don't और “going to” को informal conversation में gonna की तरह बोल सकते हैं। लेकिन पहले full sentence की clarity बनाए रखिए।

Self-Assessment Checklist

Final Summary:

  11. I'm, don't, can't

Speak Clearly. Speak Naturally. Speak Confidently.
